Some guides will only list the highest end gear like enigma and stuff, but not anything "in between" so it's not the best for a newer person to the game. those runewords and whatever you find along the way can get you pretty far for most builds.
It depends on the guide you're using, some will list 'starter' equipment which you should be able to get while going through the game - mainly runewords with runes you can farm through countess runs, like spirit, stealth, rhyme, lore, etc.
